Event Time and Date

Thursday, December 1 2016, 12:00 PM to Sunday, January 1 2017, 1:00 PM

Please contact Nikole Van Wie at nvanwie@brockport.edu if interested in this opportunity.

This opportunity is long term.

The Lower Falls Foundation, LLC, is a social impact enterprise and a neighborhood catalyst committed to developing relationships and opportunities to benefit the historic Lower Falls neighborhoods in Rochester, NY. Its mission is to be the most flexible and autonomous vehicle for channeling investment, business opportunities, beautification projects, heritage tourism, advocacy and civic engagement opportunities into the historic Lower Falls neighborhoods.

With the National Park Service’s designation of Kelsey’s Landing in the Lower Falls Gorge area as a National Trail to Freedom Site because of its significance to the Underground Railroad System during the 1800s, it offers a new opportunity to organize tours of historical sites in the Maplewood Park area and the 14621 neighborhood. These tours would focus on the UGRR and freedom at first and would grow into other themes built around the history of the Lower Falls and the Genesee River.

Volunteers will be needed to conduct tours ranging from 30-90 minutes. Future plans envision educational hikes of the Genesee Riverway Trail which could take 4 hours. Also, being planned are full day bus tours to UGRR sites in the area, first in the Rochester area, then expanding into Buffalo, Auburn, and Seneca Falls, NY.

Volunteers must be talented public speakers and interesting storytellers. They may be college students or adults and must be interested in learning in depth about their tour subjects. Historical background of these subjects will be provided, of course, but guides are encouraged to become familiar with the neighborhoods near the Gorge and with additional information about the UGRR to make them more effective with the tour audiences.

Tour guides will be interviewed and, if selected, trained to conduct each tour. All tours will be scheduled in advance using online registrations so that participant names and other information will be supplied prior to the departure.
